This is the first issue of SumukhAI Intelligence — a running brief on the markets, companies and consumer behaviour that affect how Indian businesses get discovered, trusted and chosen. It sits alongside the Resources library, not inside it: the guides teach you how things work, this tells you what just changed.
Five Developments Worth Your Attention
Honasa Consumer (Mamaearth's parent) posted its highest-ever quarterly profit. Q1 FY27 profit more than doubled to roughly ₹90.45 crore, with revenue up 27% year-on-year to ₹755.9 crore — its fourth straight profitable quarter after a rocky FY25.Verified

Nykaa's fashion business is growing faster than its beauty business, for now. Q1 FY27 revenue rose 29% year-on-year to ₹2,782 crore, with EBITDA up 68% to ₹236 crore (an 8.5% margin). Fashion GMV grew 53% to ₹1,471 crore, outpacing beauty's still-solid 29% net sales growth.Verified

Zepto's IPO paperwork showed, for the first time, exactly how far behind Blinkit it is. Its draft prospectus disclosed 640.2 million orders in FY26 against Blinkit's 916.6 million, and an adjusted EBITDA loss of roughly ₹5,042 crore against Blinkit's ₹277 crore. Swiggy Instamart's share of orders among the three fell to 20.9% in FY26, down from 34.3% just two years earlier.Verified

Eternal (Zomato's parent) is now outpacing Swiggy on both cash and profitability. Blinkit turned profitable and the group as a whole reached profitability in the quarter, while Swiggy's Instamart remained behind Blinkit and Swiggy overall stayed loss-making. Eternal has also built a cash reserve of roughly ₹18,857 crore, ahead of Swiggy's.Multiple sources

Freshworks raised full-year guidance for the second straight quarter. Q2 2026 revenue reached $237.4M (+16% YoY), with adjusted EPS of $0.17 beating the $0.13 consensus. The company now guides to $963.5–966.5M in full-year revenue, up from its prior outlook.Verified

Market Movements: India D2C & Ecommerce
BCG and McKinsey's February 2026 analyses, as reported in Indian business press, put overall ecommerce at $70–80 billion today, heading toward $180–200 billion by 2030 — with online penetration still only 6–8% of total retail. Within that, D2C specifically is estimated at $10–12 billion today, projected to reach roughly $60 billion by 2030.Named sources, secondary coverage
Two numbers worth sitting with: Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities now account for over 60% of ecommerce shipments, and return-to-origin rates fell from nearly 39% during the November 2025 festive peak to around 21% by February 2026. Both suggest the operational and geographic story is moving faster than the headline market-size number implies.Named sources, secondary coverage

New Data Worth Knowing
India's beauty & personal care market size depends entirely on who you ask — and that's the actual finding. Four reasonably credible sources put the current market anywhere from $21 billion to $33 billion, with projected growth rates ranging from 5% to 11% CAGR:
- RedSeer / Peak XV: ~$21B today, 10% CAGR to 2027
- IMARC Group: $31.2B (2025), 5.08% CAGR 2026–2034
- ReportCubes: $32.77B (2026), 5.34% CAGR
- Ken Research: $28B (2025), 7.03% CAGR to 2031
None of these are wrong, exactly — they're almost certainly scoping "beauty & personal care" differently. The practical takeaway: if you see a single beauty-market stat quoted without a named source and a definition of scope, treat it as directional, not precise.Conflicting estimates

Consumer Behaviour: What's Actually Changing
Google's AI Overviews are showing up on a fast-growing but genuinely unstable share of shopping searches. A tracked study of 20.9 million shopping results pages found AI Overview coverage rising from 2.1% of shopping queries in November 2025 to 14.0% by March 2026 — but a separate tracking firm observed coverage swing from 9% to 26% and back to 9% within a single day, and only about 18% of AI Overview keyword sets stayed stable year over year.Named studies, secondary coverage
The practical read: AI Overviews are real and growing in shopping search, but they're not yet a stable target. Building a visibility strategy around today's snapshot is less useful than building the underlying signals — clear product data, consistent entity information, genuine review volume — that tend to hold up regardless of which exact query triggers an AI Overview this week.

Companies to Watch
- Zepto — now in IPO process with its full FY26 financials public for the first time. Worth watching whether its loss narrows before listing, set against Blinkit's already-profitable base.
- Honasa Consumer — four consecutive profitable quarters is a real trend, not a one-off; Q2 FY27 results (expected around November 2026) will show whether it holds.
- Freshworks — two consecutive guidance raises from an India-origin, Nasdaq-listed SaaS company is a legitimate profitability story worth tracking against the broader "India SaaS" narrative.
AI & Search Signal
If the AI Overviews volatility above is relevant to your business, we've covered the mechanics in more depth already: how Google AI Overviews actually work, and how AI is changing product discovery specifically for anyone selling products online.
How we built this issue
Every figure above traces to a named, dated source linked inline. Where sources disagreed (the beauty-market estimates) or came only from secondary coverage of a named research firm rather than the firm's own report (the BCG/McKinsey ecommerce figures), we said so rather than presenting a single number as settled fact. Nothing here is SumukhAI's own estimate unless explicitly labeled as our interpretation. Full methodology and source-tiering rules are part of our broader content verification process.
